Nominated for four Grammy’s and nabbing two at the 2009 Grammy’s for Best New Artist and Best Performance for a Female, the newly anointed British pop princess Adele Adkins, who goes by Adele, has found a rollicking fan-base beyond the British Isles.
Her debut album 19 has hit airwaves with such mentionable nods as ‘Chasing Pavements’ and ‘Hometown Glory’. Pronounced the successor of such acts as Amy Winehouse and Duffy, Adele has managed to find her very own distinct style and sound, earning her the street cred she so deserves. An Enthused Crowd Greets Adele Inside the packed House of Blues on Thursday March 12th, the crowd was electrified with excitement. Anything that moved on stage was cheered for (at least one crew member was mollified with the audience’s heartening applause). Adele opened with her first track off her album ‘Daydreamer’, sending the audience into different realms of nostalgia. Listening to Adele sing live was a powerful experience. She nailed every note seemingly without any effort and she sang them similar enough to her CD so that people could sing along. And many audience members did for that matter. Mouthing or singing along to lyrics they knew by heart. It seemed that Adele had touched base with the audience that night. At one point an enraptured audience member yelled out “I love you, Adele.” (This happening more than once during the performance.) What?? A Monkey….. In the middle of the show, addressing to the audience that she had been to the San Diego Zoo, she took out a stuffed monkey that was purchased at the zoo that day, and tossed it to the already enthused crowd. A fight almost ensued for this stuffed monkey. But for the lucky person who nabbed the monkey they somehow survived the upheaval and got out alive with monkey in hand. Also noted during the jam was the fact that Etta James was her favorite singer. Adele broke out into James’ soulful bluesy ballad, ‘Melt My Heart to Stone’ and the whole audience proceeded to melt for Adele. Dressed in a gray shawl, jeans, and hair pulled back in a puffy ponytail, Adele pretty much won the crowd over with her bubbly and genuine spirit. An hour and twenty minutes of singing and three songs for an encore is a great deal for an idol. Maybe it was the atmosphere that night or maybe it was the crowd, but it seems like Adele will be more than welcomed back in San Diego after that show.
